Historical Spotlight: 1967 Chevrolet El Camino SS

What better time to feature a classic Chevrolet SS? The soon to be release 2014 Chevy SS cleaned house down at Daytona International Speedway this weekend, displaying the same power that made the originals some of GM’s most sought after vehicles.

For those who are too young to remember the good ol’ days of the sport truck, the El Camino was the pick of the litter, cream of the crop, and the cats pajamas. Ok so a few of those sayings are a bit dated, even for the 67 El Camino, but the message is still the same, the El Camino SS is iconic.

The El Camino was first showcased to the public in 1959, after a brief halt in production the El Camino returned and the 67 El Camino was the first one to feature the SS moniker and equipment. The El Camino SS featured a 396 Turbojet V8 engine that pumped out 325 hp and had a price tag of $2,694 (About $18,500 today).

In the days of Detroit muscle the El Camino SS held its own with some of the bad boys of Motown, especially after Chevy introduced the 454 big block engine in later El Camino SS’.

Today we look back at the 1967 Chevy El Camino SS fondly as it is a strong reminder of the times past. Stalker Chevrolet appreciates that Chevrolet has upgraded its styling, fuel economy, technology, safety, performance, and everything else over the past 50 years, but it’s still good to know that Chevy appreciates its history. Here’s to continued excellence and the return of the Chevy SS.
