How to Know if My Brakes Are Failing

Your brakes are the single most important safety system in your car. Without the ability to slow and stop your car on demand, you’ll be left to the mercy of the objects around you – which is why it’s imperative that you understand and pay attention to the signs that could indicate your brakes are failing.

New Disc Brake Pads

How to know if my brakes are failing:

  1. Sounds. The first, and most obvious indication that your brakes could be failing is if they are squeaking, squealing, or otherwise making unusual sounds. This sound is your first indicator that your brake pads are wearing down and need to be replaced.
  2. Grinding. If you feel a grinding or vibrating feeling through the pedal when you apply the brakes, your brake pads have worn all the way down, leaving them to scratch and grind the rotors. Don’t delay in getting this repaired, as this can cause more serious damage to your vehicle’s rotors.
  3. Unresponsive brakes. If you notice you have to put extra pressure on your brakes to get a response, or the response is delayed, there could be a leak in the brake fluid system. Have this addressed right away, as stopping can become increasingly challenging and unpredictable.

2016 Chevy Silverado HD’s Digital Steering Assist Enhances Control

The 2016 Chevy Silverado is packed with technology designed to make life easier. A long list of features, like powertrain grade braking, diesel exhaust braking, and integrated cruise control help drivers to maintain control in every condition, for every job. Now, Chevy has announced another technology to add to that list: Digital Steering Assist.

The 2016 Chevy Silverado’s Digital Steering Assist power steering technology is available on some double cab and crew cab HD models, and offers enhanced road holding and stability for highway driving, regardless of whether the truck’s bed is loaded or empty. Drivers will notice improved steering, as the system promises to feel and automatically correct and compensate for any road irregularities.

The 2016 Chevy Silverado offers the same powerful powertrain options as last year, including the 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 powertrain offering 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque, and the 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 turbodiesel, rated at 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque.

Three Overlooked Car Maintenance Items

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, car maintenance can often be left on the backburner. Even when we do the basic regular oil changes and checkups, we often forget to take care of some important maintenance items.
These are our top three commonly overlooked car maintenance items:

  1. Wheel alignment and tire rotation. These are often done at the same time, but car owners often overlook scheduling this service. The back tires wear differently than the front tires, so it’s important to have the tires rotated on a regular basis to ensure all the tires are wearing evenly. Also be sure to have your alignment checked, especially if you notice your car pulling to one side or the other. Ignoring this pull can result in over-worn tires and less-efficient driving.

Wheel Alignment

  1. Timing belt replacement. The timing belt needs to be replaced every 50 – 60,000 miles (check your owner’s manual). Failing to replace a slipping or broken timing belt can cause the piston and valves to collide, destroying the engine.
  1. Brake Service. Your car’s brake fluid should be checked on a regular basis, and replaced if it turns a dark brown color. In the event water is absorbed into the brake fluid, the brake’s hydraulic system can be corroded over time.

Chevrolet Certified Service Rescue Squad Put to Work at Woodward

Classic cruisers occasionally die on the road for any number of reasons.  In an effort to keep things moving at this year’s Woodward Dream Cruise, the Chevrolet Certified Service Rescue Squad was hard at work, rescuing cruisers that stalled, overheated, or ran out of gas. The squad was conveniently prepared to assist any participants at a moment’s notice.

“It’s called the ‘The Dream Cruise’, but an overheated engine, a drained battery, or a flat tire can turn that dream into a nightmare for enthusiasts whose countdown clock to Woodward starts the day the last one ends,” said Chris Brandt, Chevrolet Certified Service advertising manager in a statement. “No one wants to break down or cause ‘The Dream Traffic Jam,’ so Chevrolet Certified Service technicians will help cruisers with the kind of minor issues that can be easily remedied.”

Certified Service Technicians were on hand to help those in need at the Woodward Dream Cruise.

In an effort to help participants better prepare for this year’s event, the automaker compiled a list of the most common issues from last year’s event. Dying batteries, low fluid levels, low gas levels, and tire and wiper conditions all made the list of things to look over before heading to this year’s event.

Signs That Your Car Needs a New Battery

Don’t wait until you find yourself stranded with a car that won’t start to acknowledge issues with your battery. Instead, pay attention to these five warning signs that your car needs a new battery, and save yourself the headache of towing a vehicle with a useless battery.

Car Battery

  1. Slow engine turnover. If you have noticed that your car is slow to crank when you start the engine, your battery could be failing. Have a technician test your battery life before you find it won’t crank at all.
  2. Dim lights. If you notice the lights in the cabin, dashboard, or exterior are more dim than normal, it could be related to a lack of power in the battery.
  3. Check engine or battery dashboard light. Don’t ignore your dashboard lights. The check engine light and the battery light can be an indicator that your battery is losing power.
  4. Low battery fluid. Car batteries usually feature a translucent area in the battery casing where you can check the fluid level. When the fluid falls below the lead plates inside, it’s time to have your battery tested, and likely replaced.
  5. Age. Car batteries tend to have a useful life of around three years. It’s always a good idea to have your battery checked at the three year mark.

Chevrolet’s Pedestrian Avoidance Technology Comes to 2016 Malibu

Walking Across a Busy Street

Chevrolet has announced that its 2016 Malibu will come jam-packed with high-tech features. One such feature will be a ground-breaking low cost pedestrian avoidance technology, making a safety feature once found only on luxury vehicles and top-of-the-line mainstream models available to the masses.

The new system uses a camera mounted behind the windshield that is capable of detecting an obstruction in the car’s path. The technology alerts the driver in the event a collision is imminent, and automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not respond. Instead of using radar and/or sensors like other pedestrian avoidance technologies, Chevrolet’s pedestrian avoidance technology puts to use a single camera and software, making it possible to keep the cost low.

“The camera technology allows us to put it on more vehicles,” John Capp, GM’s director of global vehicle safety, said to Automotive News. “We can offer technologies that heretofore you had to step up to a radar package that maybe not all customers would want.”

Though GM has yet to release pricing and package details, we know that the new technology will be available on the next-gen 2016 Chevrolet Malibu later this year. Stop by Stalker Chevrolet today to learn more!

Tailgating Tips and Tricks

While we might associate tailgating with football games and warm fall weather, it just so happens that July is officially “Tailgating Month.” Here at Stalker Chevrolet, we think July is the perfect time to get all the details of your tailgating experience worked out – a practice run, if you will – before college football kicks off in just a couple of short months.

Here are our tailgating tips for a fun-filled day eating, drinking, and playing games from the back of your trusty vehicle.

Find the right vehicle. When you have a great tailgating pickup, SUV, or crossover, the rest falls into place. A good sound system, easy-access to the cargo space, and enough room for coolers, games, a grill, and folding tables and chairs are a must. May we be so bold as to make a few recommendations? The 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500, Colorado, or Tahoe promise to provide an exceptionally good tailgating experience.

Just think of all the things you could load up in this 2015 Tahoe!

Bring extra food and drinks. Nothing ends a perfectly good tailgating party like running out of food or drinks. Create a menu ahead of time, and prepare what you can in advance. Make sure to pack your drinks and perishable food items well in a cooler (we recommend separate ones), and leave extras in the blissfully cold cooler until you need them. The drinks too. Nobody, and we mean nobody, wants a warm beer.

Don’t forget games. Good company and delicious food can only take you so far. Bring along a game of corn hole or other outdoor distraction, and enjoy!

Make a playlist. Doors and windows will be open, and music should be playing. Make sure your vehicle’s sound system is up for the challenge, and consider bringing along a Bluetooth speaker if it’s not. Mix it up, and keep the beats energetic and fast-paced.

Prepare for cleanup. No one wants to talk about the party being over, but being prepared will make clean-up much less painful. Bring a box of heavy duty trash bags (which can also function as impromptu rain gear), anti-bacterial wipes, and foil and Ziploc bags for leftovers.

$439 Million Goes Toward Chevrolet Corvette Plant Upgrades

Expect more brilliance from the Corvette team as Chevrolet invest heavily in facility upgrades!

The Chevrolet Corvette is an icon in the automotive world, which is why it comes as no surprise that the American carmaker wants to make sure it looks its best. Chevrolet recently announced a $439 million investment into the only plant that produces this world-class vehicle to create a new paint shop.

“With this major technology investment, we can continue to exceed the expectations of sports car buyers for years to come,” said Arvin Jones, North American Manufacturing Manager. “These types of investments are evidence that the customer is at the center of every decision we make.”

This investment will provide a variety of upgrades for the plant, allowing it to retain 150 jobs in the process. The Corvette plant upgrades include the creation of a 450,000 square-foot paint shop on the premises. This shop will include new tooling and robots including a Dry Scrubber Booth Technology, which will help eliminate sludge waste, and FANUC robots, which makes sure each Corvette has a smooth finish.

It will take two years for the Corvette plant upgrades to be built. Make sure you check back to Stalker Chevrolet in the future for more information on the Chevrolet Corvette!

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Pace Car Takes Indy 500 Track

When it comes to performance, there is no better place to show your vehicle’s stripes than on the racetrack. Chevrolet recently announced that the Corvette Z06 acted as the pace car for the 99th Indianapolis 500, which took place earlier this month. As the fastest car in Chevrolet’s lineup, the Corvette Z06 used this opportunity to stretch its legs, showing off its performance-oriented powertrain.

The Corvette Z06 pace car is a production-spec model that produces 650 horsepower with a supercharged engine and a seven-speed manual transmission. With its performance-oriented ride and power, it is no surprise that NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon was chosen to handle this pace car.

This is the 26th time the Chevrolet brand has acted as a pace car in the Indy 500 and the 13th time that a Corvette has been used. The first time the iconic sports car was used as a pace car was in 1978. For more information on the Corvette Z06, stop in to Stalker Chevrolet today!
